Come down and get your creative juices with flowing with some post-pandemic inspiration and prepare for an exciting night of brand new theatre, poetry and more, from new and existing talent all curated by the award wining team at Elegy. Each night will have a different theme to act as a stimulus for your creative ideas - anything goes, we just want your fresh new stories!

Hatch: New Writing - 20th November Writers Line Up

Connor McCreedy

MERMAID

Connor is an actor and writer originally from rural Lancashire living in London. Represented by Paul Byram Associates. He trained in BA (Hons) Acting at The University of Northampton graduating in 2017. Recent credits include feature film 'Giddy Stratospheres’ directed by Laura Jean Marsh, ‘CROSSROADS’ (The Kings Head Theatre), ‘SKELETONS’ by Damon Rochefort (The Cockpit Theatre), he played Juliet in an all-male UK open air tour of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ along with ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ with Groundlings Theatre, ‘Hobsons Choice’ UK tour and revival with Matthew Townshend Productions, ‘CRASHERS’ (The Tristan Bates Theatre). As a new writer, Connor was shortlisted for a new full length play commission by Plaines Plough & WoLab during last year and is currently working on staging his solo show ‘MERMAID’.

MERMAID is a new solo play about David, a young lonely office worker who's mother suddenly passes away. As he tries to tackle his grief, he begins to unravel his experience of growing up Queer, and why he has always been running from his true self. It's about identity, growing up different, shame, and how we can find joy in our true selves.

Grace Kavanagh

FREDDY

Grace is a creative deviser, performer, and writer, both born and based in London. Grace has just graduated from RCSSD, and normally works with CLUNK Theatre Company, who had their professional debut at the beginning of October this year. Grace’s interests, spanning both theatre and writing, include collective memory, anger, awkwardness, and DIY aesthetics that blur the lines of performance and not.

Freddy is a monologue about a time Grace was followed home.

Tom Higgins

A Picture Of What The Land Made Us

Tom is a Glaswegian actor based in London, who enjoys writing and stories more than any respectable person should. He is represented by Red Door Management.

Inspired by interviews with a young Scottish farmer, A Picture Of What The Land Made Us is the story of a landscape, of songs and giants, and a family borne out of them.

Zoe Alker

Grand Prize

Zoe Alker is a writer for screen and stage who is currently developing her first feature length screenplay, set in her hometown in Cornwall. Zoe has recently graduated from Bristol Old Vic Theatre with a MA in Dramatic Writing and is represented by Mark Brennan at United Agents.

Five minutes before they claim their very special prize, Andi and Bea have second thoughts.

Oisín Breen

The Drear Light

A poet, part-time academic in narratological complexity, and financial journalist, Dublin born Oisín Breen's widely reviewed debut collection, ‘Flowers, all sorts in blossom, figs, berries, and fruits, forgotten’ was released Mar. 2020. Breen has been published in a number of journals, including About Place, the Blue Nib, Books Ireland, the Seattle Star, Modern Literature, La Piccioletta Barca, the Bosphorus Review of Books, the Kleksograph, In Parentheses, the Madrigal, and Dreich magazine.

A long form piece that considers age, mortality, meaning, and how the moral constraints of a society can be desperately tempting to cling to, regardless of whether they themselves are valid, and, of course, the horror of choosing against one's own nature, in order to stay normative.

Lyra Murray

Just A Day

Lyra is originally from Sheffield and trained as an actor at Manchester School of Theatre. She is represented by Abi Darling at Brynmoor. Lyra's credits include Virtual Reality film 'Nobody Wins', short film 'Breath' (selected for the Florence Film Awards and the Red Sea International Film Festival), 'My Apologies' (Sheffield Local Theatre) and 'Simon Stephens Presents' (The Royal Exchange). Lyra moved to London earlier this month and has been exploring her love of poetry and performance. She recently performed her work with Anthroplay Theatre and is very excited to be sharing a poem lose to her heart at Golden Goose's 'Hatch: New Writing'.

Written and created in the lead up to Mother's Day, ‘Just A Day’ highlights the challenges faced by people who are grieving the loss of a loved one and explores how certain times of the year can intensify that feeling of longing and isolation.

Jacob Freda

Bad Luck

Jacob is an actor, writer, and director currently based in Bristol. He studied at Durham University and trained at the National Youth Theatre. His piece 'Posho' was recently performed as part of the Never BE-fore Showcase at the Questors Theatre.

Bad Luck is a twisted fable about the dangers of underestimating others.

Imogen Wilde

The Knowing

Imogen is an actor and writer who trained at Drama Studio London. As a performer her recent credits include Les Liaisons Dangereuses (OVO, St Albans) Doctors (BBC) Happy Even After (Human Story Theatre, tour) and feature film Murder Ballads. She has previously had a short play performed at The Pleasance, and 'The Knowing' is her first full length play.

Twenty two years ago secret workshops were held in America to try and formulate a response to the public's growing fear about climate change. Financing these workshops were the key players in the fossil fuel industry. The solution they came up with was a 'campaign of doubt,' which was highly successful. The play intertwines this true story with the present day, where a group of 'Knowers' have retreated to an eco utopia high above sea level in Scotland. But how are these two groups linked? It turns out the doubt committee persuaded the UK government to take the cover up one step further... The play is about government corruption and cronyism, collective responsibility, climate justice, the mental toll of 'knowing' and following the science.

Ruth Mestel

GROW

Performer-Writer Ruth Mestel is a Jewish creative living in London. She trained at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and has worked with the Lyric Hammersmith, Barnes Literacy Children’s Festival and the Birmingham Rep. She is an Assistant Youth Director at the Watford Palace Theatre and is currently training on Introduction to Directing at the Young Vic. Her first co-created play, Eco-Ball, will be R&D'd next year with the Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton.

GROW is a work-in-progress solo show that follows the story of Tamar, a messy 20-something-year-old who hasn't quite got it together. Confused by the various voices in her sphere of influence, Tamar has 24 hours to decide what to do next. She has two options: A) Leave the room, join the rest of the world, and see what the future has in store or B) Join her shelf of lovingly cared for plants and become one of them, leaving the world behind. Join a very confused Tamar as she weighs up her options. Exploring themes of growing up, identity, and what it means to accept oneself.

Nene Harry

I bite the bed bugs back

Nene is a London born actress who is a recent graduate from Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. This is Nene’s second scratch night and she is really excited to be performing such talented writing.

Zoë Hickson

GRAND PRIZE

Zoë is an actor based in South London. Theatre Credits; Understudy Jade in The House on Cold Hill UK Tour (Josh Andrews Productions), Alice in Faith & Heresy (Elegy), The Wife in The Good Person of Szechwan (Edinburgh Fringe 2017). Zoë is really excited to be a part of the scratch night and to perform alongside an incredible bunch of artists!

Georgia Richardson

GRAND PRIZE

Georgia is a South London and East Anglian based Actor and Director. She previously trained at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Recently was involved with Tiny Plays BIG IDEAS at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds. She has also previously worked as Movement Director in the production of Nuclear War by Simon Stephens at The Old Red Lion as well as directing Hedgehog by Alex Knott at The Lion and Unicorn with the wonderful BoxLess Theatre Company.

Oliver Stephens

The Knowing

Oliver Stephens is a director and actor. His directing credits include Fake News (The Bridge Theatre/Chichester Festival Theatre/Theatre Royal Bath) Shakespeare in the Garden (Edinburgh Fringe) Macbeth and Christmas with Dickens (The Globe Players) and the award winning Sylvia’s Ball (world tour.)

Andre Bullock

The Knowing

Andre Bullock graduated from Drama Studio London in 2019. Shortly after graduating, he was cast in Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil and Casualty. After which he worked with The Faction on their tour of The Talented Mr Ripley. Most recently he has worked with Netflix on an untitled series and Twist and Shout Productions on Clickbait.

Hilda Cronje

The Knowing

Hilda Cronje is an internationally acclaimed actress, best known for playing Julie in Yael Farber's smash hit Mies Julie. Theatre Credits include : Meek , Song of Achilles, As You Like It, Pride and Prejudice; Sing jy van Bomme; Bentleys Betty’s; Agterplaas. TV and Film credits: Binnelanders, Clan of the Cavebear, Twee Grade van Moord; Agterplaas, The history of the world, The great British story and Infested. She has written and produced the environmental children’s show The Adventures of Sam Swallow and Ebola which won the Ovation Award at Grahamstown National Festival in South Africa.

Charlie Bentley

Bad Luck

He is a London-based actor who has performed alongside Ian McKellen in King Lear on the West End, amongst many other things.
